Film News Roundup: ‘Lawnmower Man’ Director Brett Leonard Boards ‘Elijah’
In today’s film news roundup, “Elijah” gets a director, a French fry documentary starts shooting and “Uglydolls” moves its release date forward.

Project Launch

Brett Leonard, best known for directing ”The Lawnmower Man” and “Virtuosity,” will direct the supernatural feature film “Elijah,” based on the Old Testament prophet.

The project is set up at Winter State Entertainment. Producers are Hamid and Camille Torabpour, Jhene Chase, Mark Smith and Patrick Werksma. The screenplay is by Hamid Torabpour and Andrew Kightlinger.

“The tremendous human and spiritual journey at the core of the epic Biblical story of ‘Elijah’ provides the ultimate canvas for my passion to explore the connection between cinematic and immersive storytelling,” Leonard said.

Winter State plans to kick off a biblical film universe with “Elijah,” which will be followed by “Elijah Part 2.” “The Lawnmower Man,” budgeted at $6 million, featured leading-edge technology and grossed over $150 million worldwide.

Janelle Monae Signs First-Look Deal With Universal Pictures
Universal Pictures has entered into a first-look production agreement with Janelle Monae’s Wondaland Pictures, the film division of Wondaland.

Under the deal, Wondaland and Universal Pictures will aim at developing “multi-genre content with an emphasis on championing underrepresented voices and groundbreaking perspectives.”

The studio announced the deal Monday and noted that Monae stars in Universal’s “Welcome to Marwen,” which opens Dec. 21, and Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” with an anticipated release in 2019 via Universal’s affiliate Focus Features.

“There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront,” said studio chairman Donna Langley. “Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio.”

Universal Signs First Look Production Deal With Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Pictures

Universal Pictures today announced that the studio has entered into a first-look production agreement with Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland Pictures, the film division of her multimedia company Wondaland.

Alongside its creative in-house team of executives including CEO ‪Monáe, Managing Partner Mikael Moore, Creative Director Chuck Lightning and Executive Producer Nate Wonder, Wondaland and Universal Pictures will develop multi-genre content with an emphasis on championing underrepresented voices and groundbreaking perspectives.

The deal further strengthens the collaborative relationship between Monáe and Universal: She stars in Universal’s upcoming Robert Zemeckis-directed movie Welcome to Marwen, opening Dec. 21, and Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet due out next year.

Janelle Monáe Joins Voice Cast of Disney’s ‘Lady and the Tramp’ Reboot
Actress and pop star Janelle Monáe is joining the voice cast of Disney’s live-action reboot of “Lady and the Tramp” opposite Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Monáe will voice the role of Peg, a wise-cracking friend of Lady’s, voiced by Thompson. Peggy Lee voiced the role of Peg in the original animated film from 1955.

Representatives for Monáe did not immediately reply for comment.

Janelle Monae has joined Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lady and the Tramp.”

She is set to voice Peg, one of the dogs Lady meets when she is taken to the pound. Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson is on board to play Lady and Justin Theroux will voice the Tramp. Thomas Mann nabbed the role of Lady’s human owner, Jim Dear, and Kiersey Clemons is Mann’s wife, Darling.

The majority of the cast will play CGI characters, similar to Disney’s wildly successful adaptations of “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Jungle Book,” though Mann and Clemons will take on live-action roles.

Lady and the Tramp” tells the story of an American Cocker Spaniel named Lady who is set astray when her upper-middle-class family has a baby. Lady ends up meeting a mongrel known as the Tramp on the streets. They embark on a romantic journey and eventually fall in love.

Janelle Monáe Joins Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman in upcoming biopic Harriet.

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer," said former slave Harriet Tubman, responsible for releasing the shackles of generations of slaves. Focus Features’ upcoming feature biopic Harriet, which will chronicle the life of the heroic abolitionist, added Janelle Monáe to the cast. The film stars Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winner Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman.

Harriet is being directed by Kasi Lemmons off a screenplay she co-wrote with Gregory Allen Howard. This will be Lemmons’ first directorial feature since Black Nativity in 2013.

Harriet follows Tubman, who was born into slavery, escaped in 1849 and helped free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad before the pre-Civil War period. Tubman served as a spy for the Union Army during the war. She campaigned for women’s suffrage after the Civil War ended.

Janelle Monae is joining the cast of Focus Features’ “Harriet,” a new biopic chronicling the life of Harriet Tubman, starring Cynthia Erivo as the heroic abolitionist.

Monae is also starring in the STX animated movie “UglyDolls” and is expected to perform original songs for the film.

Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, Clarke Peters, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Zackary Momoh, Deborah Ayorinde, and Vondie Curtis-Hall round out the cast of “Harriet.”

Kasi Lemmons will direct a screenplay she co-wrote with Gregory Allen Howard. Debra Martin Chase, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, and Howard will produce. “Harriet” is set to begin filming this month in Virginia.

Tubman was born into slavery, escaped in 1849, and made more than a dozen missions to rescue about 70 slaves through the Underground Railroad. She served as a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War and campaigned for women’s suffrage.

17 Bridges” stars Boseman as a disgraced NYPD detective who is thrust into a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers after uncovering a massive and unexpected conspiracy.

As the night unfolds, lines become blurred on who he is pursuing, and who is in pursuit of him. When the search intensifies, extreme measures are taken to prevent the killers from escaping Manhattan as the authorities close all 17 bridges to prevent any entry or exit from the island.

The studio, a division of Stx Entertainment, did not specify what roles Simmons, Miller or Kitsch will play.
